None of the six content-specific identity scales was significantly correlated with social desirability (as can be seen in Table 4). There were few significant relationships among the six scales, with career and student identity the only scales exhibiting a strong relationship (r=.68**). Three other scales were related at the level of a trend, friendship and student identity (r=.30), ethnic and student, (r=.30) and ethnic and friendship identity, (r=.27). These results suggest that the scales were tapping unique constructs, and that social desirability is not a determining factor in responses to these scales.

Convergent validity. The six content-specific identity scales were also compared to a global identity scale to test for convergent validity. The identity subscale of the Erikson Psychosocial Stage Inventory (Rosenthal, Gurney, and Moore, 1981) was used. Convergent validity was not evident in this sample, as none of the scales was significantly related to the measure of global identity. Another measure of global identity was added to the main study (Bennion and Adams, 1986) in order to further explore relationships between global identity and the content-specific scales. It was felt that convergent validity would more likely be present with Adam’s measure, in that even though a global score is created, individual items relate to specific identity domains.
